Most notably Stephen studied with renowned music educator Charlie Banacos until his passing in 2009.Įxplore a wide range of music styles including Blues, Classical, Country, Film Score, Funk, Gospel, Jazz, Latin, New Age, Pop and R&B. He draws his inspiration from his teachers, jazz luminaries, Billy Taylor, Yusef Lateef, Andy LaVerne and Kenny Werner. He tailors lessons to the student’s goals, skill level and learning style while instilling discipline and love for the craft. Privately, He cultivated his sound by dissecting and analyzing the greats who influenced him – Bill Evans, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, Bud Powell, Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson among others- deconstructing, assimilating and creating his own dynamic sound. Stephen completed his jazz studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He also currently teaches at the Northampton Community Music Center, and at Amherst College. Stephen is an applied music instructor at Greenfield Community College. Stephen has been teaching privately since 1989, instructing interested, committed students of all skill levels in music theory, concepts in improvisation, repertoire, fundamental knowledge of transcription and analysis, transposition, as well as piano techniques and ear training. ![]()
